Amerindian Development Accelerated in 2010

The development of Amerindian communities is essential and as such, continues to engage the attention of the administration as stringent efforts are being made to implement programmes to address their needs and ensure that indigenous people are integrated into the mainstream of society.

Through implementation of special programmes to foster development, Amerindians are provided with opportunities to address their needs and ensure that they develop, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai told media operatives today during a year-end- press conference in the Conference Room of the Ministry’s Quamina and Thomas Streets Office.

Educational Opportunities

The Hinterland Scholarship Programme has been significantly boosted as huge sums continue to be injected by government to prepare particularly the youths for a technologically advanced future.

According to Minister Sukhai, 72 hinterland scholarships were distributed, while a scholarship awardee Treasure James was awarded for her outstanding contribution to the education sector this year.

The hinterland scholarship programme is executed by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to ensure that indigenous children are given the necessary skills needed to aid in the development of their communities.

Schools uniform programme

In 2010, $63M was expended for the purchase of school uniforms for students in Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9. Approximately 27, 643 students benefited in this regard.
Secondary education

Government continues to invest billions of dollars to expand secondary education to under-served areas by reconstructing and establishing schools in hinterland settlements. Through the expansion of several programmes teachers have also been trained in hinterland regions to deliver quality education.
